Theodore Roosevelt was a police commissioner, a governor of NY, war hero, and probably most notably our 26th president of the United States. T.R. was not intentionally made president however; he was the Vice president at the time of William McKinley’s assassination. Although he was not elected by the people, people would soon come to adore T.R. for his strong, energetic and direct personality. In addition, T.R. became a prominent figure in the United States progressive era, and would become a stronger advocator for the conservation of nature, this became apparent with his plans to build national parks like Yellow Stone. Lastly, T.R.’s foreign policy was very strong considering he traveled the world extensively through out his lifetime.
What was the Square Deal?
Roosevelt issued the square deal in 1907; “square” essentially refers to a fair and “square” system, in which the neither rich nor poor are subject to discrimination. This meant that all of T.R.’s policies would not favor one class over the other, and even bolster the weak lower classes, which for a while were in fact left in the dark in light of the industrial era’s spotlight on big business.
What was the effect of the Square Deal? Describe one of these: Northern Securities Case, Hepburn Act (1906), Pure Food and Drug Act (1906), AMERICAN ANTIQUITIES ACT (1906)
The pure food and drug act (1906) forbid that items that’s are “adulterated” or that contain misbranded ingredients/chemicals cannot be sold. However, this all came as a result of the square deal, because at the time foods that contained harmful chemicals/ingredients were all the lower classes could afford.
