Believing that more education would help bring an enlightened population, Progressives pushed enrollments to record levels (86% of children in schools by 1920) without seriously assessing how schools were doing.
B. Law--Judge’s opinions needed to be based on factual information, not just oral arguments, and precedents
1. Muller V. Oregon (1908)--limited women's working hours2. Not all Progressive legal principles prevailed. In Lochner v. New York (1905), the Supreme Court overturned a New York law limiting bakers' working hours.

1) John Dewey was a philosopher and educational reformer. He entwined his beliefs about education with common beliefs about democracy. He believed that education should be based on students and their experiences instead of the strict traditional teaching. He thought that in order to increase public voting rights we would first have to reform education to make sure the public was properly educated.
2) The purpose of the settlement house was to offer social services to the urban poor.
3) One issue Jane Adams fought for was helping people climb out of poverty. She was the cofounder of the Hull House which was one of the fist settlement houses.

5) Dubois believed you needed to assert yourself if you wanted to achieve a goal in society. Washington believed you needed to work with the majority in society to get what you wanted.

Q.) Briefly describe John Dewey and his educational reforms
A.) John Dewey was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer whose thoughts and ideas have been highly influential in the United States and around the world. His views on education can be expressed as the following "Education as a Necessity of Life", of his 1916 book, Democracy and Education: an introduction to the philosophy of education: "What nutrition and reproduction are to physiological life, education is to social life. This education consists primarily in transmission through communication. Communication is a process of sharing experience till it becomes a common possession."
Q.) What was the purpose of the settlement house?
A.) The settlement houses offered social services often targeted towards the urban poor. The settlement movement started in London in the mid 19th century. These houses often offered food, shelter, and basic, as well as higher education, provided by virtue of charity on part of wealthy donors, the residents of the city, and scholars who volunteered their time.
Q.) Describe one issue that Jane Addams fought for
A.) Jane Addams was a devout Pacifist. She held fast in her beliefs that fighting was wrong and any problem or argument that arose could be resolved peacefully.
Q.) Explain the similarities of Washington and Dubois
A.) Washington’s views on "racial uplift" were that Washington offered black acceptance in disenfranchisement and social segregation if whites would back the idea of black progress in education, agriculture, and economics. Agriculture to Washington was one of the soul ideas of his "racial uplift" theory. Dubois horribly disagreed with many of Washington's opinions. He was an avid supporter of the rights of blacks everywhere. Civic equality, education, and the right to vote
Q.) Why did each believe that their way was the best way?
A.) Washington was convinced that his school had education that would keep blacks "down on the farm". Dubois believed that education was necessary for everyone no matter what race they were. He believed that education for anyone would lead to potential success and that everyone should have that opportunity.

DuBois however, felt that Washington's plan to gain equality was only going to further increase the oppression of African-American's in the United States and more specifically the South.
