In the late 1800s the Hawaiian Islands had become very important to the United States. The United States had a trade treaty with Hawaii that allowed Hawaiian sugar to be sold tax free in the United States. Hawaii was also important to the United States as a naval fueling and repair station.
In 1893 Samford B. Dole removed Queen Liliuokalani from power and declared him self president of the republic of Hawaii. President McKinley supported the annexations of Hawaii but believed he didn’t have the support in the senate. The president called for a joint resolution of congress with many political leaders who were afraid that the islands would be annexed by Japan and passed the resolution. In 1900 Hawaii officially became a territory of these United States.
The Hawaiian people were very bitter that they United States took over there territory and made them a state. President Clinton signed a congressional resolution in 1993 apologizing for the U.S role in the overthrow.

Until annexation in 1898, Hawaii was an independent state, recognized by the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany with exchange of ambassadors. However, there were several challenges to the governments of Hawaii during the Kingdom and Republic periods. America's annexation of Hawaii in 1898 extended U.S. territory into the Pacific and highlighted resulted from economic integration and the rise of the United States as a Pacific power. For most of the 1800s, leaders in Washington were concerned that Hawaii might become part of a European nation's empire. During the 1830s, Britain and France forced Hawaii to accept treaties giving them economic privileges. In 1842, Secretary of State Daniel Webster sent a letter to Hawaiian agents in Washington affirming U.S. interests in Hawaii and opposing annexation by any other nation. He also proposed to Great Britain and France that no nation should seek special privileges or engage in further colonization of the islands. In 1849, the United States and Hawaii concluded a treaty of friendship that served as the basis of official relations between the parties.
Samuel Dole, as the new leader of Hawaii, sent a delegation to Washington in 1894 wanting annexation, but the new President, Grover Cleveland, opposed annexation and tried to restore the Queen. Dole declared Hawaii an independent republic. Spurred by the nationalism aroused by the Spanish-American War, the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898 at the urging of President William McKinley. Hawaii was made a territory in 1900, and Dole became its first governor. Racial attitudes and party politics in the United States deferred statehood until a bipartisan compromise linked Hawaii's status to Alaska, and both became states in 1959.
When Queen Liliuokalani moved to establish a stronger monarchy, Americans under the leadership of Samuel Dole deposed her in 1893. The planters' belief that a coup and annexation by the United States would remove the threat of a devastating tariff on their sugar also spurred them to action.
By continuing the expansion of the United States and their Democracy government, other nations would recognize this expansion and look up upon it. By expanding their territory, the expansion of democracy also increased.

American Foreign Policy is based entirely on imperialism, which is when one country tries to gain power over other smaller countries and adopt them as colonies. Many Americans opposed European imperialism and even American imperialism. The USA government justified imperialism by the theory of manifest destiny which is the belief that it is our destiny to expand and gain land. There was a widespread debate over American imperialism. On one side of the argument people who saw economic and strategic benefits of gaining colonies supported imperialism while others felt that imperialism contradicted America’s founding beliefs of neutrality. Rudyard Kipling wrote a book titled White Man’s Burden which shows how American’s felt about foreign policy at this time. Kipling wrote that it was America’s job to civilize the rest of the world. While many people supported American imperialism many there was widespread criticism surrounding European imperialism. There major differences between US imperialism and European imperialism. European imperialism was more formal than American imperialism and Europe had more control over their imperialistic ways. American imperialism was much more informal with less control over their actions. American imperialism was mainly based on power over others while European imperialism was widely based on domestic and overseas trade and influence.
America used these principles in order to annex, or take over, Alaska and Hawaii. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 by William Seward. Seward was Secretary of State. At this time there weren’t many people in Alaska. Everyone thought Alaska was a worthless investment for the United States because people thought it only consisted of snow and ice. Seward was often made fun of for the purchase of Alaska. His purchase became known as Seward’s Folly. As it turns out the country was proven wrong and Alaska did have many valuable resources that were useful for America. Abundant amounts of fur, fish, lumber, coal, gold, and most importantly oil were found in the Alaska territory. President Eisenhower made Alaska the 49th state admitted to the USA on January 3, 1959. Alaska turned out to be a great benefit for the United States and helped shape American Foreign Policy of imperialism.
Hawaii was also annexed by the United States but in a very different way than Alaska. The Hawaiian Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean and were settled by American missionaries in the 1820s. These islands were profitable for American Sugar Planters. The American Sugar Planters wanted control over this land. The Sugar Planters led a revolt against the Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani. Queen Liliuokalani wanted to get rid of the preexisting foreign power in Hawaii by America. The US marines dethroned Queen Liliuokalani in the revolt started by the Sugar Planters. America had gained control over Hawaii in 1869. Sanford Dole became the president of Hawaii. Dole willingly agreed to annexation by the United States. The Hawaiian republic ended officially in 1900. President Eisenhower officially made Hawaii the 50th state of the USA shortly after Alaska on August 21, 1959. The annexation of Hawaii helped to shape US foreign policy and imperialism.
Alaska shaped foreign policy by showing that imperialism could be peaceful and beneficial to the country while Hawaii showed that imperialism could be violent and create enemies for the United States. Overall the annexation of Alaska and Hawaii made America more powerful.

  4. After Hawaii was annexed in 1898 the United States had a rise of power in the pacific. In 1849, the United States and Hawaii concluded a treaty of friendship that served as the basis of official relations between the parties.
Hawaii was a supplying spot for American whaling ships, a new source of sugar cane production, Hawaii's economy became increasingly integrated with the United States. An 1875 trade reciprocity treaty further linked the two countries and U.S. sugar plantation owners from the United States came to dominate the economy and politics of the islands. Hawaii also became a place for the military to use as a base, which helped protect America because we would see if any body would try and attack. Oil and goods was also supplied in Hawaii for America.

Hawaii was a large interest for the United States because of its location. Hawaii was a prime location because it was in the middle of a large body of water. It could be used for a stop for trading vessels for food, goods, and water. Hawaii also stood between the U.S. and Asia. It could keep any Asian attacks away from the homeland of the U.S. Queen Liliuokalani tried to establish a stronger monarchy but Americans took over and declared Hawaii a state. Taking over Hawaii, we established a base of military defense to respond to any problems or attacks outside of the U.S. Hawaii also served as a resource for sugar cane, pineapples and coconuts. Hawaii could also provide natural resources for the navy ships and airplanes that come and go. They also gave us cultural items like flower necklaces, hula skirts, pineapple foods, and cool names.

Hawaii- Promotion of Human Rights and National Peace

    • Hawaii is one of four states that were once independent before becoming states From the years 1810- 1893 Hawaii was considered a monarchy before it was taken over by American and European businessmen

    • James Cook was the first to visit the Hawaiian Islands called them the Sandwich Islands. He then published a series of volumes on his travels which attracted more visitors from Europe such as whalers etc. Many diseases were brought to this area and caused the Hawaiian population to decrease.

    • During the time of the 1780’s and 1790’s, the localized leaders on the islands fought small battles that lasted until about 1795. It was decided that it would be in the best interests of the citizens of the Islands for there to be one government. It was chosen that it would be ruled by King Kamehameha who would be referred to as King Kamehameha the Great.

    • As the European influence over the islands increased, missionaries came as well to convert people to Christianity. Their influence even reached the current King, Kamehameha the second. He was the first Christian King of the Hawaiian Islands.

    • The U.S and the British were eventually called in to intervene when several leaders died without naming an heir which led to riots across the islands. A constitution was eventually signed called the 1887 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii. This diminished the power of the King. When Queen Liliuokalani proposed a new constitution that replaced that one, citizens and business leaders formed a Committee of Safety which then made up a provisional government in 1893.

    • Grover Cleveland then stated that overthrowing the queen was illegal and ordered her to be reinstated. The provisional government refused. Hawaii became the territory of Hawaii (versus the republic of Hawaii) in 1898.

Protection of U.S. Citizens, Trade, and Investments

In the 1800s, the Pacific island of Hawaii was seen as a very important asset to the United States. Therefore, it was imperative for the U.S. to protect the investments, trade and citizens. The Hawaiian Islands provided trade ships with natural resources such as coal, for fuel.

Many trade ships on their way to Asia would make stops in Hawaii for repairs and obtain things such as food and other necessities. Hawaii served as a natural base for the American Navy. (Pearl Harbor). The islands have been a long- time main base for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. From New England, missionaries went to Hawaii to settle and discovered the economic prosperities these islands possessed. Later, more people from America went to the “Sandwich Islands”, became sugar planters when they set up vast numbers of sugar plantations, and established businesses. The islands had very good climate that would sustain fruit trees such as pineapples and coconuts. When the industry of whaling was one of the greatest in the Pacific, Hawaii was one of the main sources of obtaining supplies. Many supported the interest of the United States to annex Hawaii. The U.S. annexation of Hawaii would solve problems like trade restrictions on the sugar produced and improving the nation’s economy. In 1874, a treaty was signed with the U.S. and Hawaii. This treaty provided the United States with trading rights. Hawaii’s sovereign, Queen Liliuokalani was not in favor of the U.S. annexation. She tried to strengthen the monarchy but failed. Queen Liliuokalani gave up her throne and the U.S. declared Hawaii the fiftieth state.
