Document 1
The opportunity to get rich, to attain great wealth is here…now within the reach of almost every man and woman…. You have no right to be poor. It is your duty to be rich…. I sympathize with the poor, but the number of poor who are to be sympathized with is very small… let us remember, there is not a poor person in the United States who was not made poor by his own shortcomings… Russell Cornwell, Acres of Diamonds, 1900
What was the attitude of Russell Conwell toward the poor?
Document 2
It is true that wealth has been greatly increased, and that the average comfort, leisure, and refinement have been raised, but these gains are not general. In them the lowest class do not share…There is a vague but general feeling of disappointment; and increases bitterness among the working classes; a widespread feeling of unrest and brooding revolution. Henry George, Progress and Poverty, 1905.
Why did Henry George warn against dissatisfaction among the working classes?
Document 3
The employer desires to reduce wages and lengthen the hours of labor, while the desire of employees is to obtain shorter hours of labor and better wages, and better surroundings. According to Samuel Gompers, what are the differences between the goals of employers and employees?

Document 4
I am going to fight… If it takes all summer and all winter, and all next summer and all next winter. Yes, even life itself. I will fight this to the bitter end. I will never recognize the union, never, never. HC Frick, President, Carnegie Steel, 1892

    General History
    Annexation of Hawaii 1898-1900

The United States president at the time that Hawaii became a state was William McKinley. His term was from March 4, 1897 to September 14, 1091. He was part of the Republican part, and his vice presidents were Garret Gobart, and Theodore Roosevelt.
There were many Notable events from 1898-1901. The Spanish-American war, which was a brief war that the United States waged against Spain in 1898. The cause of this was the Cuban struggle for independence, American imperialism, and the sinking of the U.S. warship Maine. This war was ended by the Treaty of Paris, leaving the United States with the land of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. There was also the beginning of Anti-imperialism that the people of the United States didn’t want the United States to practice the act of Imperialism on weaker nations/countries. The first national bank was also set up during this time period so that people could set up bank accounts.
HAWAII V. MANKICHI was a Supreme Court case that had to do with a man that was charged with manslaughter in Hawaii. With the legislation of the Republic of Hawaii existing at the time of the annexation, it is legal notwithstanding it is not in compliance with the provisions of the Fifth and Sixth Amendments of the Constitution.
People of Hawaii angered because since the arrival of whites they had lost their native religion, their land, and their traditions; with the overthrow of the monarchy they lost even their independence. In 1897 there was a petition against the Annexation of Hawaii that was shot down by the Patriotic League.

    Purchase of Alaska

Following the end of the civil war, America began its lost lasting policy of manifest destiny, the idea where the Americans were destined to expand west from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean. Slaves had just gained freedom through the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, and the U.S was on its way to becoming a more united nation. Americans soon found themselves in competition with all the owners of the western lands. Russia was the first group to settle Alaska, however they lacked the financial resources to support major settlements or a military presence along the Pacific coast of North America and permanent Russian settlers in Alaska never numbered more than four hundred. Knowing their weakness, the Russians offered the territory to the United States, and Secretary of State William Seward quickly took up the Russian offer and on March 30, 1867. He agreed to a proposal from Russian Minister in Washington, Edouard de Stoeckl, to purchase Alaska for $7.2 million. The Senate approved the treaty of purchase on April 9, and President Andrew Johnson signed the treaty on May 28. Criticism in the press was harsh, portraying the newly acquired wasteland as “Seward’s Folly,” “Seward’s Icebox” or Johnson’s “polar bear garden.” Most people saw Alaska as a desolate wasteland that would never be settled. In 1896, however, Seward's investment paid off. Gold was discovered near the Klondike River, which immediately set off a widespread gold rush. In 1880 Joe Juneau and Richard Harris discovered gold on Gastineau Channel and the capital of Juneau is founded. Harris and Juneau named the creek where they found gold, Gold Creek, and they named Silver Bow Basin at the head of the creek. In 1882, the First Alaska salmon canneries were built in central Alaska and first commercial herring fishing began. Two years later Steamers began bringing they first tourists to Alaska. Congress passed First Organic Act; $15,000 appropriated to educate Alaska Native children. As the years go by, more and more resources were found and businesses such as oil and fishing flourished. These industries benefited when the Alaska Railroad, started in 1914, connected Anchorage and Fairbanks with Seward,.As more and more people moved into Alaska Congress voted to grant it territorial status in 1912. Development in Alaska was accelerated when the U.S. government built the Alaska Highway, an extension of the Alaska Railroad, and other facilities such as docks and airfields. More and More people began inhabiting Alaska, and they began to want the same rights as U.S citizens. In 1959 they succeeded, when Alaska became the 49th state, the first one not connected to the lower 48 states.
